How to Start a Company From Zero

Starting a company from scratch can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve never built a business before or don’t come from a technical background. But the early stages of entrepreneurship are often less about expertise and more about mindset, curiosity, and resourcefulness.
Soulaima Gourani, co-founder and CEO of Happioh, built a software company without ever writing a line of code. Her experience offers a reminder that modern entrepreneurship rewards learning speed and persistence just as much as prior experience.
The Advantage of Being an Amateur
“I’ve always believed that it is actually an advantage to be an amateur, to not knowing what you're doing. There are several moments in history where it has shown that not knowing the full consequence of what you're doing is actually an advantage. Ignorance is bliss, you know, and it's really something that we don't hear much about. We think we have to bring in a lot of experience every time we reinvent ourselves, but nothing could be more wrong. What should drive you is some kind of passion or interest that motivates or inspires you.”
Being new allows you to question assumptions and approach problems with fresh eyes. Passion and curiosity often matter more than technical mastery in the earliest stages.
Study the Wealth of Free Education Online
“When I first started listening to podcasts, I simply went online and searched for how to build software. I listened and listened and listened. I’d go on walks listening to these podcasts with tears rolling down my face because I didn't know how to do this. And I started talking to people. So I did the Y Combinator Startup School. It’s completely free. I took all of the modules twice and those were the basics. After that, I spent a lot of time talking on Clubhouse. Just tune in to everything.”
Access to high-quality education has never been more available. Self-directed learning, paired with conversations and experimentation, can close knowledge gaps faster than many people expect.
Maximize Your Time
“I only have 24 hours a day, like everyone else, but what I accomplish throughout a day without feeling stressed is just remarkable because I optimize. Sometimes when I brush my teeth, I would put something on, maybe a little TED talk, or just have it as a constant background in the backdrop of my life. I try to avoid scrolling on social media just for entertainment. Why not read a quick article on Medium or Forbes instead? You can even have it read out aloud for you if you prefer with software. When you bring all of that together, it's thousands of hours of education yearly.”
Small habits compound quickly. Using pockets of time intentionally can turn ordinary moments into steady progress without adding pressure.
Building a company from zero doesn’t require knowing everything at the start. It requires the willingness to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward.
